Gauge Swatching: Why It Matters and How to Do It Right
By Crochti Team
Why Crocheters Skip Gauge Swatching
Let's be honest: gauge swatching feels like homework before the fun begins. But skipping it is the number one reason garments come out the wrong size.
What is Gauge?
Gauge is the number of stitches and rows per inch in your specific yarn, with your specific hook, using your specific tension. Everyone crochets differently.
How to Swatch Correctly
- Chain more than you need: For a 4" swatch, chain 20–25 sts.
- Work more than required: Make 6" of fabric to measure the center (edges distort).
- Wash and block it before measuring (fabric changes after washing).
- Measure multiple times: Use a ruler and count stitches in a 4" section.
Adjusting Gauge
| Your swatch has... | Solution |
|---|---|
| Too many stitches | Go up a hook size |
| Too few stitches | Go down a hook size |
| Correct count, wrong row count | Adjust tension |
When Can You Skip It?
- Blankets and dishcloths: Size variance won't matter.
- Amigurumi: As long as the fabric is dense enough.
Never skip it for:
- Garments: A 1mm gauge difference = 2 inches off on a sweater.
- Hats: A small error means the item won't fit.
Crochti Tip
Include your gauge in pattern notes when using Crochti. The AI will adjust stitch counts to match your personal tension.
